A drinks’ guide signed Falkenberg

To define what makes a good drink is as individual as answering the question what makes good music. It is however established that there now is drink for all tastes in Falkenberg.

Beautiful Beans

Cafés, patisseries and coffee shops would be nothing if someone hadn’t roasted the coffee beans the right way. In Falkenberg we have a surprising number of good places to buy quality coffee. On top of that, we have our own producers!

Swerl, which in recent years has met its guests from the blue coffee bus at Skrea Strand, is now focusing solely on their roasting. Coffee connoisseurs from all over Europe buy their coffee, and in 2024, Roastful listed them among the top 100 roasteries in the world. Try their homemade coffee, roasted here in Falkenberg!

In industrious Slöinge we find Slöinge Kafferosteri that nowadays actually not only roast their own beans. The Eråker family are now also wizards at kombucha, tonic and tea.

The fantastic sourdough bakery Ave Kultur now also produces its own coffee. It can be purchased on-site at their location in Fridhemsberg.

Pints

Micro breweries conquered Sweden in the middle of the 2010s and many disappeared in the competition as quickly as they appeared. The brewery tradition in Falkenberg can be traced back to the end of the 19th century when Bryggeri AB Falken was founded, later became Falcon and later again turned into Carlsberg. Perhaps it’s part of that tradition that has rubbed off on the other breweries in town and makes them stand tall in the rapid development. As a matter of fact there are many very good brewers here!

Pine Ridge Brewery, nowadays Pine Brewing Company and also The Zoo Restaurant are situated at Västra Gärdet in the central parts of Falkenberg and have over the last couple of years completely raked the drink industry fairs of well deserved prizes. The animal theme is not only dominating the restaurant, but the varieties of beer have names like Jumping Jack Hoppy Lager, The Edgy Eagle and Shady Shark.

The most beautifully situated brewery in Falkenberg, Halland and possibly even in Sweden must be Agerörs kustbryggeri by the sea in Olofsbo. A small brewery that doesn’t compromise with the production. It’s also popular to book a beer tasting session here.

Glommens bryggeri is on the ”same road” as Agerör, but as the name suggests – in Glommen. Run by a productive and creative gang whose unbelievably popular event “Grym, Grymmare, Glommen” has become a real festival. Their beers play on the little fishing village’s fishing tradition and have names like “Lighthouse” and “FG5 Lovisa”.

Kombucha and tea

The demand for good non-alcoholic products is greater than ever. Add to that an awareness of our environment, sustainable thinking, and wellness, and you get magically delicious and healthy products like kombucha.

Out in the scenic Källsjö, cheese was produced until not too long ago. Nowadays, however, a newly started brewery occupies the old dairy. Källsjö Brewery & Flavor Workshop is not a traditional brewery; instead, they work with handcrafted non-alcoholic beverages, such as sparkling “Cultivated Tea.” The company actually snagged a bronze in the 2023 Swedish Championships in Food Crafts in the Innovative Food Craft category for their Noble Crane (Seaweed Bubbles). They also shared a silver in the Kombucha category for their Oolong Nantou. Congratulations! Who did they share the silver with? Keep reading…

Of course, kombucha is bubbling and fizzing. The same goes for Annika and Helena, two food enthusiasts behind AH Kombucha. How about flavors like Raspberry/Licorice, Apple/Ginger/Lime Leaf, and Strawberry/Elderflower? And yes, Annika and Helena shared the silver in the Swedish Championships in Food Crafts with Källsjö Brewery in the Kombucha category. AH Kombucha received the silver for their Kombucha Rödtjut! Congratulations!

Even south of Falkenberg, in the coastal area of Ugglarp, beverages and vegetables are being fermented. Syster Sur can be found on bottles of kombucha and beer, as well as on jars of kimchi. Available for purchase from their friends in the area!

Gin & Akvavit

Ever since the state monopoly’s distillery and alcohol agency Vin & Sprit, that had an important production site in Falkenberg, was sold off and the Master Blender Folke Andersson retired, Falkenberg distilled booze has been conspicuous by its absence. But, as a shining light in the dark, the culinary collective at Skrea Backe appeared to bring us Skrea Backe Distillery. At the time of writing they have delivered two kinds of really good quality gin and one ditto aquavit. We dare to stick our necks out and say that we will hear, see and most of all, be able to taste more from this gang.

…and Tonic

Yin & yang. Laurel & Hardy. Gin & Tonic.

In the area there are also several producers of really good tonic, as a mixer or to drink on its own. Slöinge Kafferosteri and Ugglarps Tonic are some of the manufacturers that hold their own.

Even more mixers. And liqueur, of course.

The very latest addition to Falkenberg’s drinks scene is Drinkmix from Glommen. Their sugar syrups come in stylish small swing-top bottles and are available in selected shops as well as at drinkmix.nu. From December 2025, it will also be possible to order their Limoncello from Systembolaget (Sweden’s state-owned alcohol retailer).

Juicy Drinks

The demands on table drinks are raised in our Swedish homes. As consumers we are more quality aware and want to know what we are drinking and where it comes from. No drink is better in this respect than locally pressed apple juice.

North of the town Falkenberg, a few stone throws from the farm shop Gårdsbutik Thuresson, is Hule Musteri, a garden centre with an orchard of 200 apple trees, plantations and much more. When apple season arrives people flock to get their garden apples pressed at Hule. The apples are weighed, washed, crushed and pressed into pure apple juice. No additives or sugar.

Apples are also pressed south of Falkenberg, in the always current village of Slöinge. Äppelgården, an orchard that looks as if it was taken from a scene out of the story The Brother’s Lionheart by Astrid Lindgren is the home of Slöinge Äppelgård & Musteri, which also makes kombucha.

Sustainable Drinks

We live and work in a region with many growers and farm shops. Several of them sell berries and fruit and in many cases you can also find cordials and squash of different varieties, depending on season and harvest results. It is for example not unusual to be able to purchase elderberry cordial at Ugglarps Grönt or raspberry squash at Stora Berg. If you are lucky, perhaps you can acquire some beetroot juice from Tångagård at that particular time of the year.

Don’t Forget The Milk

It is indeed quite easy to forget the most basic drink there is (possibly in competition with water that is relatively important too…) The drink that built most of us. Locally, you can obviously obtain milk produced nearby. It’s not the excellent milk that many of our farmers sell to Arla for distribution to our supermarkets that first comes to mind, but Monica’s unpasteurised milk in Skrea. To get it in a glass bottle makes the experience even better. Pay a visit to Skrea Ost when you are in the neighbourhood.

What About the Wine?

Of course there is also wine. Ästad Vingård is most known in the region for their unbelievably high ambitions, but just on the border between Falkenberg and Halmstad municipalities there are vines that provide the Hallandians with wine. At Stora Bergs Självplock raspberries and strawberries are growing alongside grapes. The varieties Solaris, Rondo and Cabernet Cortis are mainly turned into rose, white and sparkling wine that can be purchased on the farm, but also in local restaurants like for example Ocean at Skrea beach.

Where To Find the Local Drink?

The information on where to find the products can usually be found on the producers’ home pages. At least this is true for the small scale businesses. In the Falkenberg area the farm shops and also supermarkets are good at displaying and promoting locally produced drinks. Our local restaurants are also proud of the drinks that are produced here and if you visit the restaurants in town it’s a rule rather than an exception that there are locally produced drinks to have – with and without alcohol.

Alcoholic beverages like beer and spirits are also sold through the state run off-licence Systembolaget and are easily found there.

Themed Events: Drinks

Of course, there is no point in being a successful drinks’ destination if nobody can access the drink. That’s why there are several events happening in Falkenberg and the surrounding area to shine a light on, enlighten people and spread the knowledge about what is created and available here. The event Falkenbergs Matdagar is dominated by food, but drinks are also claiming more space. The Road Trip, where producers open their doors to visitors, was arranged for a fourth time in 2023 and in September a food fair is held in the town centre.

An appreciated and much visited tradition is Falkenberg Drinks Festival (Falkenbergs dryckesfestival). Here a wealth of flavours are showcased and few are left forgotten. Whiskey, rum, alcohol free beverages, beer and more are highlighted.

The proprietors of the now world famous Neapolitan pizzeria Lilla Napoli not only masters proving of dough, flour and oven temperatures; They are real wine experts. Their reoccurring wine festival has quickly gained immense popularity.

Grymt, grymmare, Glommen (Groovy, groovier, Glommen) is the creative and cocky name for a festival focusing on artisan beer and food trucks. As implied by the name, the event happens in Glommen, and has proven to be a real crowd magnet.
