The Flower Walk

“I like it better here, where I can smell the flowers”. In spite of the fact that he was a bull we can relate to Disney’s Ferdinand the Bull. In our little town there are thousands of flowers in one magnificent flowerbed after the other. We also like it better here.

The Flower Walk – Annual and Perennial Plantings in the City

We work year-round to adorn the city and aim to be in places where many people can enjoy our green and vibrant plantings. The parks department is responsible for all the municipality’s plantings and decorations. Our staff design and plan both flower beds and floral arrangements in urns themselves. First out are the pansies, which are planted around Easter, and then we continue with all the summer flowers at the beginning of June. By Midsummer, we expect all the summer flowers to be in place. The municipality does not work with a specific theme, and thanks to the fact that several different people design the plantings, there is a great variety.

In the municipality, we have a 1500m² greenhouse where we grow and cultivate all our plants. Here you will find perennials, seasonal flowers, and exotic plants. We grow about 200-300 types of flowers per year. With our own greenhouse, we have the opportunity to try new varieties and offer climate-adapted plant material with local proximity and perfect timing. We use only biological pesticides.

At Stortorget, there are circular flower beds with both perennial and annual plants. The elevated planting in the center consists solely of seasonal plants and changes character twice a year. This is how Emelie Måttgård, who designed the planting, describes her idea:

“This year’s summer flowers at Stortorget are a collaboration with a preschool, as I wanted to convey a sense of playfulness, hope, joy, curiosity, and love — and who does that better than children? I had an idea, and the children helped me bring it to life. I hope that you, as you pass by, carry that feeling with you and leave the square with a big smile. The children selected their top five favorite flowers and also contributed to some of the other decorations. And to you who are wondering — YES! You’re welcome to touch the plants as long as you don’t damage them. A big thank you to the children and teachers at Dalsängars Preschool 2024–25 — without you, this wouldn’t have been possible. // Warm-hearted laughs from Emelie.”

Skansen Tullbron

The display bed by Tullbron offers vibrant colors in both spring and summer. Thomas describes Skansen like this:

“When your curiosity draws you to these flowers, and you marvel at their beautiful colors that make you happy, that joy will spread to you — and others will want to look at you and ask what it is you’ve experienced that has filled you with such joy.”

The Hill

The planting area known as “The Hill” changes its appearance three times a year: spring, summer, and winter. Each season brings a new theme, decorated with flowers, trees, shrubs, and figures. So keep your eyes open and take in all the details.

This year, the planting was designed by Kicki.

“Summer Meadow Serenity
Created on the way home on a bus in early September, with a hint of summer still lingering outside the window and five garden magazines filled with inspiring images of plants and design in hand. The idea became to try and create a ‘small’ part of a room—a sense of a room—right in the heart of the city, to spark the imagination about what can be done in a small space.”

Badhusparken

In the two annual flower beds next to the Bath House, approximately 1,050 plants have been planted.

This is how Lena, who designed the beds, describes her vision:

“Badhusparken in Falkenberg is a green oasis where all visitors should be able to find calm, harmony, and less stress.
This year, my hope is that through my plantings — and with a little imagination — visitors will feel as if they’re stepping into a jungle when they enter Badhusparken.

This year’s theme includes large green leaves, tall grasses, and flowers. These plants are intended to give a lush, vibrant feeling of greenery and the wildness we associate with the jungle. The bold colors of the flowers represent the birds, animals, and insects of the jungle, which are often vividly colored. The wide variety of flowers attracts all kinds of insects, so when you’re in this jungle, the sounds are real! A warm welcome to my jungle this summer.”

sandplantering vid vatten

Along the waterfront towards the harbour you find plantations in sand with perennials, grasses and bulbs. Sand plantation is a sustainable kind of flowerbed and will require less maintenance and watering than a traditional perennial flowerbed. Sand plantations with open areas between plants and herbs are favourable to wild bees and other pollinating insects.

The flowerbeds are designed by Peter Korn, Klinta Trädgård, and were planted in cooperation with the workers from the Parks and Coastal department of the municipality. The plants are grown in sand, without organic soil materials and are planted bare-rooted. 6 900 bulbs have been planted and seeds have been sown in the top layer.

This kind of horticulture is relatively new to Falkenberg municipality, but plantations of the same kind can be found at the forest cemetery, Skogskyrkogården.
