Marsten
Falkenberg’s southern archipelago, a formerly popular destination and one of Falkenberg’s few islands. We are of course talking about Falkenberg’s island pride; Marsten.
The island lies just off Grimsholmen Nature Reserve and consists of a few small skerries called Storaskär, Västraskär and Östraskär. At the highest point stands a whitewashed cairn, a beautiful landmark. For a long time it was a tradition for the people of Falkenberg to visit the little island on Ascension Day for a picnic. However, great cormorants invaded the site in the 1990s, and after that the island was no longer visited as frequently for picnics.
Nowadays the island is a popular destination for SUP or kayak trips. If you start from the southern shore of Ringsegård, it’s a 6 km round trip. It’s a journey on open sea, so wait for perfect weather before you set off. Feel free to bring a snorkel to discover the life beneath the surface.
Marsten is quite difficult to land on since it’s made up only of rocks, there is no beach. But it’s lovely to paddle and spend time between the skerries. If you’re lucky, you’ll see seals basking on the rocks.
