Källtorps Våtmarker (The wetlands at Källtorp)

This nature area is a real paradise for birds. Here you will find both temporary visitors and all-year residents. An exciting bridge and a lookout tower will spark most children’s curiosity. Källtorp Wetlands also teaches us about animal and plant life.

Make an excursion

There are two entrances to the wetlands. We usually use the one furthest from town. Here the picnic table is close to the parking lot and it’s pram friendly. It’s not a long walk to the lookout tower and you can follow a gravel road to the railway bridge crossing the river Ätran. Here is a pedestrian bridge that the children find exciting, particularly when the train rumbles past above.

Bird watching

If you stop at the parking lot closest to town instead, you will have to walk a little bit further to the lookout tower. There are steps leading down through the woods, which makes it unsuitable for prams. Here you will pass a bird feed automat where you can see greenfinches, yellow buntings, siskins, nuthatches among others. After a walk you reach a really nice tower with seats, both inside the tower and below, and information signs. By the south parking lot, closest to the Carlsberg brewery, there is a toilet.

Valuable Wetlands

Here you can learn about how the wetlands disappeared, how they were reconstructed and how important they are to a number of species. Here the birdlife changes over the course of the year, but also day by day. In the winter the wetlands are waterlogged and the birds are fewer, but you can still see mallards, goldeneyes and tufted ducks that like the water. On the fields by the river different kinds of geese dwell. If you are lucky you may catch a glimpse of the white-tailed eagle that sometimes circles the skies.

Pack your binoculars

We always manage to leave our binoculars behind when we visit the Källtorp wetlands, so I like to remind you to bring yours! There are always plenty of birds and during spring, when the migratory birds come back, it is a real show. From the lookout towers you have a good view of the area. Some parts are closed off during breeding season, but they are clearly signposted.
